A MEDAL given to a Northwich soldier who took part in the Zulu Wars is set go under the hammer at a Knutsford auction house.

The medal belonged to Private Thomas Wilkinson – a foot soldier in the 2nd Battalion of the 21st Royal Scots Fusiliers – who took part in the battles for the British Empire against the Zulu Empire in 1879.

It is expected to fetch between £300 and £350 when it goes up for sale next month at Marshall auctioneers.

On one side the medal shows Queen Victoria’s head and the other a picture of a lion with South Africa written across the top.

It has Pte T Wilkinson 2-21st Foot inscribed along the edge and it is believed to have been awarded after Private Wilkinson, who was in his early 20s at the time, took part in the Battle of Ulundi – the last major battle of the Anglo-Zulu war.

Thomas took up a career as a methodist lay preacher and railway signalman after the war and was the grandfather of 90-year-old Northwich resident Florence Marrow.

Terry Webb, 62, of St John’s Road, Knutsford, was helping to clear his godmother’s home in Richard Street, Northwich as she was moving into a care home.

“When I had a look at it, it seemed to be more of a campaign medal from the Zulu war,” he said.

“I knew immediately that it was from that era but having done some research on the medal I realised that the conditions of issue were very complicated.”

Only 862 medals were issued to the regiment and Terry said life on the battlefields in Africa must have been much different than Northwich in the Victorian years.

“He must have been involved in some significant feats to win the medal at all,” Terry added.

“It is extraordinary to think of someone in that era going to such an exotic location and also to be involved in such dramatic events and then come back to late 19th century Northwich.

“It is such a shame that we don’t know more about it, it is a marvellous flash of light in a quite dramatic period of British history.”

The medal will be up for auction at Marshall’s in Knutsford on Tuesday, July 6.

Boer war memorial vandalised

Posted by: | Comments (1)

VANDALS searching for “treasure” have damaged a Boer War memorial site near Dundee in KwaZulu-Natal.

James van Vuuren, deputy director of Amafa, the provincial heritage watchdog body, said the Elandslaagte Battlefield – which was erected by citizens of the Netherlands in memory of volunteer Dutch Corps who fought for the Boers during the Anglo-Boer War of 1899 to 1902 – had been damaged.

“This battlefield is an evocative place to visit because it is little changed and it is possible in the silence to imagine the fury of the battle. Whoever damaged the memorial seems to be under the mistaken impression that there is treasure buried underneath,” Van Vuuren said.

“At least two memorials are vandalised in this way every year, causing us costly repairs. Any information leading to a conviction will be rewarded,” he said.

He said the war graves at the Winston Churchill capture site at Chieveley and graves at Schuinshoogte Battlefield near Newcastle, were also regularly dug up by vandals.

“Many of KwaZulu-Natal’s battlefields, located mostly in undeveloped rural areas, have survived remarkably unchanged.

“They contribute to the province’s living heritage as descendants of combatants on both sides regularly visit them to pay homage.

“They provide an exciting outdoor history classroom for thousands of pupils every year,” Van Vuuren said.

Amafa has appealed to anyone with information about vandalism to call 035- 870-2050/ 1/2 or the police.

New And Old Military Gear

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Although many things still remain the same, military gear is constantly changing. You could probably say this about everything that has stood the test of time. For instance, travel has gotten much more efficient, but at the end of the day it still consists of a person getting from point A to point B. This article will go over the various types of gear that current and past soldiers wear to battle.

Many things about military gear are still exactly the same. For instance, warriors will still use killing weapons and will cover themselves in gear to protect themselves from harm. Also soldiers still undergo rigorous training and are still viewed as heros by the ones they are called on to defend.

The many differences come in the form of the kind of gear and the kind of training that soldiers receive. Soldiers today fight with weapons that are powerful enough to destroy entire armies. The new technology has led to different types of training to be lengthened or shortened depending on the needs. Firing a rifle takes much less skill than fending and stabbing with a medieval weapon. Currently, basic training only makes warriors learn to shoot with their rifles for one to two weeks which compared to ancient soldiers weapon training is not very long. Also todays soldiers do not need to be as physically fit as the soldiers that needed to wield swords after marches that may have lasted months.

The protective gear of todays soldiers does consist of something to protect the body, and something to protect the head, but the similarities end there. For example if a modern day soldier were to use a piece of roman armor to deflect a bullet, he would never live to see another day. The ancient armors are best reserved for display purposes rather than combat. Flack jackets and kevlar helmets may not stop missiles, but they will protect the average soldier much better than the heavier weaker armor of our past.

Soldier gear has gotten much better, but it still has a long way to go before it ever stops being improved on. The need for better soldier gear will not end until the last army has completely disbanded.

I hope you enjoyed reading this page on old and new soldier gear. Feel free to link to this page from any of your websites, blogs, or social book marks.
