Thiepval

The Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme is a huge imposing structure and was built to commemorate the 72,090 missing British and Commonwealth soldiers who died during the Battle of the Somme and have no known grave. 600 graves lie in the shadow of the memorial to British, Commonwealth and French soldiers. Each year on 1st July and 11th November, a major ceremony is held at the memorial.

The memorial was built between 1928 and 1932 and was unveiled by the Prince of Wales in July 1932. There is also a visitors centre nearby.
